By 1983 the New Romantic movement Spandau Ballet had come from was beginning to fade into memory - the band decided they had no intention of getting lost to the same fate. Always ambitious, they got busy changing their image and sound.

Gone were the kilts frilly shirts and makeup as well as the sometimes chilly electronics of their first two albums. In their place came tailored suits, a mainstream sound and an album that was recorded at Compass Point studios in Nassau in the beauty of the Bahamas. The new pop-R&B style was heavily influenced by the producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain who had worked with the likes of Imagination.
It also reflected the growing skill of guitarist Gary Kemp. The band's primary songwriter who crafted a set of tunes aimed squarely at the charts. True, their third album, really established the brand's pop appeal as this refined, stylishly elegant album reached number one in the UK charts and remained a chart fixture for an amazing ninety weeks. The album spawned arguably the band's biggest ever hit singles, with the irresistibly melodic True which hit the number one spot and the follow up, Gold, which reached number two in the UK charts.
