Uncle Tupelo's album No Depression is cited as one of the most important albums in the alternative country (or alt-country) genre. The album title was taken from a 1936 song by the Carter Family, connecting eras and generations of country music tradition. The album's punk attitude turned the fairly traditional country genre on its head by combining heavy guitars with mandolins, fiddles, and banjos. Uncle Tupelo was the brainchild of singers/songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy., who went on to become highly respected songwriters and band leaders f Son Volt and Wilco, respectively.
Uncle Tupelo's lyrical depictions of rural, blue-collar life paint grim portraits of Midwestern existence as life in the twilight zone, split between days working in the factory ("Factory Belt") and nights spent blurry-eyed and wasted ("Whiskey Bottle," "Before I Break").
The first three Uncle Tupelo studio albums (No Depression, Still Feel Gone and March 16-20, 1992) are available on black vinyl.
